If you’re unfamiliar with the ONR, it is because a lot of their work goes on behind the scenes. The ONR funds research and work at over 450 universities and laboratories across the country, and some of the research from this cooperative effort has led to fifty different Nobel prizes over the years.
The ONR operates as part of the executive branch of the Department of Defense and is made up of three primary categories, or ‘Directorates.’ These are the Office of Transition, the Office of Innovation, and the Office of Research. These offices are primarily concerned with research and development, beginning with basic and applied research, and moving on to development of advanced military and combat technologies.
In 2008, the ONR was awarded ‘the best place to work in the Federal Government’ by the Office of Personnel Management, and careers are open to everyone – from entry-level civilians with Bachelor of Science degrees to top-graded military officials with relevant scientific and technological experience.
